There are many people who do not understand how the US Social Security Administration determines whether a person with a disability is eligible for social security disability benefits.
In brief:
To qualify for Social Security disability benefits, you must first have worked in jobs covered by Social Security. Then you must have a medical condition that meets Social Security's definition of disability. In general, we pay monthly cash benefits to people who are unable to work for a year or more because of a disability.
Benefits usually continue until you are able to work again on a regular basis. There are also a number of special rules, called "work incentives," that provide continued benefits and health care coverage to help you make the transition back to work.

Ticket to Work (TTW) and Work Incentives Planning and Assistance (WIPA)
You can take your Ticket to any Employment Network (EN) or State Vocational Rehabilitation (VR) agency to request assistance in job training, preparing materials to use to finding a job, locating employers, information about work incentives and other assistance in you may need in order to go to work.
The goal of the Work Incentives Planning and Assistance (WIPA) Program is to assist SSA`s beneficiaries with disabilities to make informed choices about work. The WIPA program replaced the Benefits Planning, Assistance and Outreach program effective October 1, 2006.
