HandySpeech Mobile App helping those with speech disabilities

The HandySpeech mobile app is a handwriting-to-speech application that provides a unique opportunity for people with speech disabilities to communicate.

HandySpeech was created by 12-year-old software developer Eric Zeiberg, who was inspired to create the application by his sister -- an autistic individual with speech disabilities. “I hope that HandySpeech will provide much needed help and open new opportunities for people in need,” said Zeiberg. “The application is dedicated to courageous people who struggle every day to overcome their disabilities.”

As an assisted speech technology application, HandySpeech supplements or even fully replaces speech for people with spoken language difficulties. The application helps people with speech or language impairments, including autism, stuttering, stroke, muscular dystrophy, neck, throat or oral cancer among others. Users write what they want to say in any one of 13 languages and the software converts the handwriting into speech.

Disability Equality Index (DEI)

The AAPD (American Association of People with Disabilities) and USBLN (US Business Leadership Network) are working together to produce a corporate benchmarking tool on workplace policies and practices regarding the employment of people with disabilities.

The Disability Equality Index (DEI) will provide an objective way for companies to benchmark their progress and identify avenues for continued improvement. It will keep practitioners informed of best and emerging practices and point them toward peers in the employer community that are already demonstrating exemplary efforts.

The DEI will become a unique tool that will focus on building relationships and consensus with executives in the private sector to advance employment opportunities for people with disabilities throughout the workforce.

You can learn more about the DEI here.
