Protect the Rights of Students with Diabetes

Here is an article titled, "Protecting the Rights of Students with Diabetes" from the U.S. Department of Justice Blog.

The author writes:
Children and adults with diabetes are protected by our nation’s disability rights laws, but they often face discrimination on the basis of their disability in decisions about where they may go to school, conditions of employment, or admission or access to the goods, programs, or benefits of state or local governments or businesses offering public accommodations. The Justice Department’s Civil Rights Division has worked closely with the American Diabetes Association and other advocacy groups on behalf of children and adults with diabetes to ensure they are not subjected to illegal discrimination.

All About Developmental Disabilities

ABOUT AADD

All About Developmental Disabilities (formerly Atlanta Alliance on Developmental Disabilities) was founded in 1956 and has grown from a local, grassroots organization created by a group of concerned parents, to become the State of Georgia’s premiere provider of needed services, broad-based education, and effective advocacy for children, adults, and families living with developmental disabilities. We believe people with developmental disabilities, and their families, are among the most challenged and excluded people in society.

Each year, All About Developmental Disabilities serves several thousand people through a variety of programs addressing comprehensive family support, legislative advocacy, employment training and support, recreation, community education, and information and referral services. For more information about our programs, please visit our “Programs” menu.

Now in its sixth decade, AADD continues to build strong collaborative partnerships to increase public awareness of the substantial benefits of including persons with developmental disabilities in all aspects of life; and to promote needed changes in systems that will ensure that people living with developmental disabilities are heard and respected at every level of society.

For many of the people AADD helps to support, AADD means the difference between stability and homelessness; sickness and health; isolation and inclusion; discrimination and dignity.

US Labor Department announces about $20 million to fund state-run programs aimed at improving employment outcomes for people with disabilities

WASHINGTON — The U.S. Department of Labor today announced the availability of approximately $20 million to fund programs that will improve education, training and employment opportunities for adults and youth with disabilities. A solicitation for grant applications is published in today's edition of the Federal Register.

The Disability Employment Initiative is a joint project of the Labor Department's Employment and Training Administration and its Office of Disability Employment Policy. Programs to be funded will serve individuals who are unemployed, underemployed and/or receiving Social Security disability benefits. The goals of the project are to improve coordination and collaboration across multiple service delivery systems, build effective partnerships that leverage public and private resources to better serve people with disabilities and, ultimately, improve employment outcomes of people with disabilities.
"Workers with disabilities suffer from one of the lowest employment rates of any group in the American population, even in times of prosperity," said Secretary of Labor Hilda L. Solis. "It is vital that state and local agencies work together with private sector partners to improve these statistics. Through this second round of funding, we are expanding the Disability Employment Initiative to include programs in additional states."
